As a result of constant route repetition in the lakes and more popular spots in Scotland I've made a point to myself of visiting places I've not been before.
This weekend saw me off to the Howgills (you guessed it, never been there before!). Having driven past it so many times on the way up the M6 and thinking, "They look pretty good, I should probably give them a go," I finally got round to it this weekend.
I wasn't dissapointed. Although smaller than their lakedistrict counterparts, they still felt mountainous with steep sides and extensive interlinked ridgelines.
The route we (myself and old housemate Iain) followed took us to the highest point of the howgills, Calf, via Winder, Arant Haw and Calders. We returned by the famous Cautley Spout, an impressive waterfall which falls 175m.
It was a great place to escape from the crowds as well. We saw no fell walkers at all, and only a couple of mad fell runners with their dogs.
Adding to the feeling of isolation was the weather, with visibility down to about 20-30m; so no great views then.
All in all a welcome change from the norm.
Andy
